Over the weekend, I made a trip to the Phoenix Zoo. All by myself. It kind of made me insecure when I anxiously went up to feed a giraffe, and the zoo employee asked if I was with the family behind me. I replied "No," and he stated, "It's just, you?" I wanted to say, "it's not just me, it's ME!!" But, I was so excited to get up close and personal with my soon to be long necked friend, that I handed him my money and went on my way. I have to say, I had the best time at the zoo, walking around, enjoying the beautiful Arizona weather, and taking pictures of all the animals. It was the perfect activity to push the reset button. And I mean, after all, how often do you get to look an orangutan straight in the eyes? Which has inspired me for a new adventure. Happy Monday!

When it comes to life and to living, we don't know what's going to happen. We don't know where we'll be, or who will be there with us. The future has yet to be written, and as the days unfold, so do our stories. I think that's kind of the magic of it all. That we live with endless adventures and possibilities. We can't control everything around us, nor, should we want to. Which is why, most of life is a leap of faith. Faith in ourselves and in others. Faith in the sky, and in our wings. Those first steps in a new direction can be scary or difficult. Do we go cautiously? Or do we throw ourselves without warning, into the wind, and hope for the best? Maybe our landings will be rocky and we find that we have to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off. Maybe they will be smooth, and for a while, we find ourselves content. Or maybe, with the biggest leaps of all, our landings will take us to a place where dreams are reality, where our hearts fly, and where our story truly begins. One leap could start it all.

I thought I had today's blog post in a bag. I had previously written something and when I went to copy it over here, I hit control X not control C. Why, whyyy!!! Key board designers are playing a nasty little trick on us putting those two buttons next to each other. Anyways, when I went to press undo, my words were already lost in the clouds. Now...I'm at a loss, because certainly, I don't want to rewrite that same post. But cliff notes version, it pretty much consisted of moments like, accidentally walking out of my house with two different pairs of shoes on; never wearing matching socks (because who has time for that); and falling in front of several people, while walking but mostly admiring, a cavalier king charles spaniel at the same time. In conclusion, I'm awkward.

But on another note. I've featured this skirt previously on the blog before. You can check out how I originally wore it here. And maybe re-read that post like it is a new one. Yayyy...

I love the look of a high pony tail. It is a great way to keep the hair out of your face, while accenting your features. I love the look of a pony with a little more sophistication. Happy President's Day! I particularly hate anyone who has the day off. Don't worry, I'll like you tomorrow. It's just that, having to work on national holidays isn't fair. Am I right? Needless to say, it was difficult waking up this morning. And when the hair was pulled back, the makeup done, and the shoes slipped on, I sat on the bed with my doggy, as the sun glared through the shutters, and I asked her if she would trade places with me for just one day. "You can be me...and I...I can lay around and bathe in the sun all day long without a single care in the world! It'll be fun. Promise." I tried to sell it as best I could. But she just sat there with a blank stare in her eyes. Sometimes, though, I think there's more than a blank stare. She's probably looking at me and thinking, "Hooman, you stupid." Which is precisely why, I am working today.

I hope you all had a lovely Valentine's Day, sans Valentine or with Valentine. Husband and I have been going, going going, non-stop...that all we wanted to do was have a night in. He grilled steaks, I baked these brownies, and we ate in front of the t.v., watching the news. So romantical, I know, but we're totally content with being an old married couple.
On another note, I love when I shop at Forever21 and come across unique pieces, such as this skirt. I wasn't in the mood to buy it when I found it, but immediately saw it's potential and knew exactly how I could wear it. This is my fire-y take on the skirt, pairing it with a bold color, and juxtaposing the dainty pleats against a black leather jacket. When I remix it, I will go for a more subtle look, playing with soft pastels.

Do you know up from down?
When you look down, your head follows, your body slumps. You can't see where you're going. You're vision narrows because you're not focusing on what's around you, only the ground at your feet. And maybe that ground is wrong. Your thoughts start to follow in the same downward direction, and eventually, you find yourself feeling lost and unhappy.
But when you look up, don't you see how your eyes sparkle? Your body becomes open to receive, and suddenly, you notice all the beauty that surrounds you. There isn't just one path anymore; only infinite sky and your soul with wings.
So look up more. Up is hope. Up is light. Up is happiness.

Frankly, I hate mustard. Purely a ketchup kinda gal. And pickles? Don't even go there. But when it comes to pants, anything goes. Originally, I paired the sweater and top with plain ole blue jeans but it just didn't have that pop factor I was looking for. Sure, it felt classic, but ho-hum. Solution? Throw on a pair of colored jeans and we're feeling much better. Besides, it's kinda like I'm walking on sunshine on this cloudy day.

Costa Rica Pt. 3 - Santa Teresa

Our final destination in Costa Rica was at the southern tip of the peninsula at a place called Santa Teresa. We heard about Santa Teresa from a Dutch couple we had met in Montezuma, and thought, why not? The surf destination was a dirt road with waves on one side and town on the other. We made the observation that no one here was older than 30. Sure, there were a few, but it was those who never left.

The town had a completely different feel from anywhere else we had seen. Surf bums with killer tans walked the dirt roads with their bare feet towing their boards in hand. Stray dogs followed searching for food or to play in the waves. Howler monkeys lounged in the shade of the trees. When you reached the water, there were a hundred silhouettes of surfers trying to catch the perfect wave. The sun was so harsh, the air was hot, the water refreshing. Like a religion, when it was time for the sun to set behind the horizon, every surfer in the ocean, every body on the beach, stopped what they were doing, to watch, in all her majesty.

Our goal in Santa Teresa was just to relax as much as we could before we had to go back home. This meant lots of surfing for Husband and lots of laying out on beach for me. I also had the opportunity to practice yoga, which was a totally cool experience for me. We also had a couple's massage on the beach and went fishing. Husband was so proud of himself for catching a Wahu. Our captain told us it was the perfect fish due to it's size, color and meat. We were able to eat (some of) it for dinner. Because of it's large size we made sure to share it with our captain and some locals. I let my little fishy go back into the water. We were lucky enough to also see a pod of whales, which was an amazing experience.
So many great memories were made in Costa Rica. So many that I will cherish. I live for these moments and I cannot wait for the next adventure!

Costa Rica Pt. 2 - Live by the Sun Love by the Moon

Montezuma was the next destination on our trip. This town was off the beaten path as we had to trek through miles of rocky dirt roads to reach it. When we first arrived, I have to be honest. I felt out of my comfort zone as we searched for a place to stay. Accommodations were far from luxurious. And let's be honest, I'm dressed head to toe in JCrew and my bag has a curling iron in it. People are driving by me on quads in bathing suits and half the town has dreadlocks. I was sticking out like a sore thumb. Eventually, we found a spot with a clean bed and AC. Once we settled in, we were able to explore the town and the beach to see what they had to offer. And really, I acclimated quite well once I surrendered my American ways and went sans makeup and hair. When it came to clothes, less was more in the hot and humid weather; bare feet were optional.

The town is filled with hippies and yogis, and has a super laid back vibe. There are hand made jewelry makers on every corner, yoga studios, and some really good places to eat.

We signed up for a snorkel adventure tour of Isla Tortuga on our second day there. We both don't like doing "touristy" things, which is why we make close to no plans when we travel. But, this turned out to be one of our favorite days in Costa Rica. We were able to swim in the warm waters and see some really cool sea life. We had a chance to wander the island, and meet some really interesting people from all around the world with extremely different walks of life.
On our third day there, I got to cross off something on my list; horse back riding on the beach. I have ALWAYS wanted to do that! The views were amazing as we journeyed through forest and sand to reach our final destination at a cascading water fall.
Throughout our stay, I enjoyed watching the locals playing futbol and shopping at the local market for fresh bread and treats. I loved walking the beaches and watching the sun disappear as she ushered in the night. I cherished long talks with Husband, pondering the secrets of the Universe, as we sat in the sand staring up at the vast canopy of stars in the sky. That same sky, written by one hand, as it has always been. I can still hear the waves softly crashing against the earth. And picture the color of the ocean without any moon.
I grew really fond of this place after only spending a few days there. In fact, I felt like I belonged. Even though home was so far away.
I think the biggest lesson I learned on my visit to Montezuma was to judge less, and be open. Be open to all that surrounds you. Because if you don't? You miss out. You miss out on meeting people that you probably would never come across in your ordinary life. You miss the beauty of the simplicity. You miss the magic of a single moment. But most of all, you miss the extraordinary journey.

Costa Rica Pt. 1 - San Jose/La Fortuna

St. Augustine said that, "The world is a book and those that do not travel read only one page." I wrote my own chapter when R and I jumped on a plane to Costa Rica. The country was absolutely beautiful, the people were kind, and the food was delicious.
The plan was to rent a car out of San Jose and follow the paved, sometimes dirt, road. We drove around the entire Western peninsula, trying to see as much as we could in the allotted time that we had. From San Jose, we traveled to what may have been my favorite destination, La Fortuna. The town was quiet and quaint; absolutely breath taking. We stumbled upon Tabacon, a five star world resort, and somehow managed to get a room there for half the price. The hot springs, heated from Volcan Arenal, were unbelievable. You could hear the wild life all around as you looked up into the sky, seeing nothing but a canopy of exotic trees, camouflaging the blue sky. There was fine black sand beneath your toes, and waterfalls on your back.
We also took a nature walk through bridges hanging - sometimes 100 feet in the air- in the rainforest; as we kept our eyes peeled for wildlife. We were the first ones there because we were told when all the tourists come, they scare the wildlife away. We managed to see a sloth and some howler monkeys. The sights and the views, and the shades of green were absolutely breath taking. The trees must have been 1,000 feet tall. Thinking of this place still moves me. I wanted to stay longer and zip line or rappel down a waterfall, however, there were other places to be seen...

I'm always telling her how much I looove her hair! (It's really so perfect, isn't it?) We're both pretty girly and I think she'd agree that there's something so feminine and confidence-inspiring about doing one's hair. I definitely feel most beautiful in curled hair. I feel most beautiful in a smile. I've noticed that when I'm smiling, it's usually because I'm focused on the people around me, and not myself. When I look outward, and give freely, my whole being lights up. There's nothing better than the joy that comes from lighting up someone's day with a smile. I feel most beautiful in... Pink! I didn't always like the color pink, whilst growing up it felt like such a typical girl color and most certainly too noticeable.

As I got older I started to appreciate the color and the effect that it can have on my mood as well as people around me. Wear bright pink and all of a sudden the world seems like a much happier place. I am definitely known for wearing a lot of pink on my blog but I have received so much positive feedback on how my use of bright colors have made people smile when they see a new "pink" post from me that I cant see myself ever stop wearing it.

When Katie asked me to write about what I feel most beautiful in, a brown and black pattern I probably wear too often came to mind. As strange as it may sound, I feel most beautiful wearing a touch of leopard. Actually, the more leopard I've got on, the better. Whether it be the additional fierce-ness I seem to embody while wearing the print, or the beautiful juxtaposition it creates against any (and I mean any) other pattern...leopard makes me feel beautiful with a touch of sexy. I am still found cheesing most of the day.

Today we have my talented and witty friend, Jenni, from Story of My Life! Another one of my daily must reads! STOKED to have her on here! She will definitely brighten your day with this post.

Hi there Running On Happiness readers! PSYCHED to be here with you today. If you read Katie's blog, you clearly have great taste. Katie is sweet, and smokin', and all around awesome, and I'm honored to be here! Ok so, all flattery aside, let's get down to business. I'm supposed to talk to you about what I feel most beautiful in. I thought about getting creative and meaningful with this--like saying something along the lines of, "I feel most beautiful when I'm doing good deeds for others and carrying myself with grace and dignity and style," and that would all be kind of true, but I think I'm going to get a little more literal. Because, honestly, I feel most beautiful when I do same damn WORK on myself. I don't think I'm one of those girls who wakes up looking beautiful in the morning. Especially if I happened to have slept on wet hair. You see, my skin isn't always perfect and clear and even, I have some scary-dark circles under my eyes at all times regardless of how much sleep I got, and well, basically... did you guys watch the latest Twilight movie? You know how Bella looks towards the end when the vampire baby is rapidly killing her from inside? You know, the grey skin, sunken eyes, and overall appearance of being near-death? Well, that's how I look fresh out of the shower or when I wake up in the morning. It's during those times that I avoid mirrors. So, I feel most beautiful after spending a good couple of hours bathing, shaving, plucking, drying, straightening, curling, applying makeup, dressing up, wearing heels, and, basically, appearing nothing whatsoever like my natural form. That, my friends, is when I'm feeling GOOD. Confidence abounds! I want to pounce my husband! People treat me nicer! (this might be my imagination.) I am happy about life! Am I taking this too far, Katie? Oh well. The truth shall set you free. ;)

I remember feeling quite beautiful on this night in Hawaii. It probably had something to do with the fact that I was a bronzed goddess back then, though, which sort of makes me weep as I have now given up tanning. My old-lady self will one day thank me. (sorry for the poor picture quality... this was taken pre-DSLR)

We are starting off the "Beautiful" series with Veronika. I've been following her blog since it's conception. I love her style and attitude, and I'm excited to share her with you today!

Hello, I'm Veronika and I run the blog "Girl & Closet." I'm so thrilled that Katie asked me to guest post for her today; she is such a sweetheart and an incredible friend. Yay!! I love visiting Katie's blog daily and reading her sweet & uplifting posts - it's such a great start to my day and the perfect dose of inspiration. As for the topic, "I feel most beautiful in" ...for me it’s a two parter. When it comes to clothes, it’s always a red lip, anything with lace, and adorable vintage floral patterns. They always steal my heart, and it's definitely the kind of outfit I feel the most me in.

The second part comes from the people I love and who I choose to surround myself with. I love kicking back after a long day with my hubby & pooch or with our friends. Usually at our home, we enjoy a fantastic dinner together and share lots of laughs. I enjoy taking the time to connect with the people that are special to me. Having amazing people around is definitely what keeps me smiling!

I also feel most beautiful in... natural surroundings with the room to stretch and explore gorgeous forested trails. For that, Martin & I feel super lucky to live in a stunning ocean-side community. Being surrounded by all this beauty and nature always lifts my spirits and brings a certain calm to my inner world. I can't wait for the warm weather to return - we had such amazing memories from this past summer.

On Holiday

I am officially out of the country on holiday in Costa Rica. I'm either flying through the rain forest on a zip line, riding horses on the beach, hiking a volcano, or getting poop thrown at me by a monkey. Hopefully, not the latter.

I moved to NYC last year to continue running after my dreams. I run my own (small) label, Taylor Morgan, while I go to fashion design school at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). When I am not busy with Taylor Morgan and FIT, I am a part time bridal stylist on 5th Ave. My favorite role though is being a wife to my best friend James.

I love to blog about my journey in design school, marriage, the fashion industry, everyday life, NYC, and all things design. I like to think of my life as the real version of MTV's show "The Hills." I share what it is really like to go to fashion design school, with student loans and no fancy job at Teen Vogue. Trust me, it's way less glamorous than you think. We struggle and fight to make ends meet in NYC in our studio apartment but some how it all works out. Photo 101 - Aperture and Depth of Field

I receive emails asking for photography tips and thought I would try to explain what I think is important. If you own a DSLR camera, you want to stop shooting in auto mode. Understanding aperture, or the A or AV setting on your camera is where taking control of your photography begins. I'd like to do my best in explaining this function. Please keep in mind that I am not a professional, and everything I have learned about photography, I have taught myself. So, I hope I do not confuse you, as this is one of my lengthiest (and driest) posts. Please feel free to correct me if I have a misstep.

Aperture and Depth of Field 101

The main function of a camera lens is to collect light. There are two main functions for collecting light; the aperture and shutter speed. How little or how much light enters your camera while taking a photo will affect the overall outcome or exposure of the photograph.

Too little light = underexposed, or very dark.
Too much light = overexposed, or very white.
A properly exposed photograph will have just the right amount of light.

When shooting in auto, your camera automatically evaluates the subject based upon how much light is available and adjusts the camera's settings for aperture and shutter speed automatically.
If you want more control, switch your camera's setting to Aperture Priority or the 'A' or 'AV' mode. This will allow you to control the aperture. The camera will then automatically adjust the shutter speed (which we'll discuss later).

What is Aperture?

The aperture of a lens is the diameter of the lens, that opens and closes when you take a picture.
Think of it like the pupil of your eye. When there is a lot of light available, the pupil will constrict and become smaller, allowing less light to come in. When there is little light available, your pupil will dilate or expand, allowing more light to come in.

The aperture of your lens works in this way:

A smaller lens opening means less light is collected.
A larger lens opening means more light is collected.

When taking a photograph, you can set the aperture of your camera to be very open, closed very tightly, or increments in-between. The settings of the aperture openings are called "f-stops". This is where it gets confusing because it's kind of counter-intuitive, but you'll get the hang of it. Below is a diagram I created showing the relationship between the lens' opening and the corresponding f/stop.

The smaller the number (or f/stop) --> the larger the lens' opening --> the larger the aperture.
The larger the number (or f/stop) --> the smaller the lens' opening --> the smaller the aperture.
F/1.8 has a large lens opening. F/22 has a small lens opening.
F/1.8 is a much larger aperture than F/22.

Depth of Field

Which aperture you choose depends on the depth of field you want. Depth of field or DOF is how much of the photo is in focus, and how much of the photo is not in focus.
Think of it like this: small numbers mean small DOF. Large numbers means large DOF.

Shallow Depth of Field

A shallow depth of field means that the subject is in focus but the background is out of focus. Shooting with a large aperture (small number) - f/1.8 - creates a shallow depth of field. Shallow depth of field is great for portrait photography.
Let's go back to the example of the eye. Think about when you go in for an eye exam and the optometrist dilates your pupils. The dilation drop expands the pupils so the optometrist can see all the way into the back of the eye. The pupil or "aperture" becomes wide open. Your vision becomes very blurry. Your depth of field becomes shallow as you may be able to focus only on one subject while the rest of the picture is fuzzy. Your vision also becomes highly sensitive to light, again, because your pupil is wide open.

Here are some examples of photos with shallow depths of field:

Notice in all three of these pictures, the subject is isolated and in sharp focus, while the background is out of focus. All three of these pictures were taken on the A setting on my Canon T1i Eos Rebel with the largest possible aperture setting on my camera's 50 mm lens - f/1.8. If you are new to DSLR photography and you have a Canon, I highly recommend buying this lens. It is $100 and will produce these types of effects. The 50 mm f/1.4 is three times the price.

Note, that if your lens allows you to go this large, always switch it back to at least F/2.2 or F/2.5 when taking outfit pictures or pictures with more than one subject. I don't know how many times I have taken outfit pictures on f1/8 to find the photo batch completely blurry and unusable.

Large Depth of Field

Shooting with a small aperture (large number) - F/22 - means that foreground, background, subject - everything - in the photo is in equal focus. Shooting with a small aperture is ideal when shooting landscapes because you want objects both near and far in focus.

Here are some examples of photos with large depths of field:

Notice that everything is in focus in these three photographs and you can see all the of details.

Play around with the different apertures and see the different effects each f/stop produces on the A or AV function of your camera. Go to the absolute smallest, to the absolute largest and every increment in-between. Messing around with the settings is the best way to learn.

I hope this helpful and not too much information or too confusing. It can be a lot to rack your brain around but totally worth it once it makes sense. Next, I will be explaining shutter speed and ISO. I will also post how to amp up your photos in the post production process.

Whoa, it's my first post of 2012 and I come in on a Friday night looking like a box of crayons. Maybe you remember. When you were just a little kid, you had the opportunity to submit names to Crayola to be chosen as a crayon color's featured name? Oh man. I filled that out. After thinking long and hard about it, of course. Now, I don't want to blow your mind or anything, but I'm going to. Pizzamataz.

Just let that sink in for a few seconds. Right? Right?

"Pizzamataz" for the color red sounded brilliant to my seven year old self. To my 27 year old self too. But. As history goes, my claim to fame was never naming crayons. Crayola never caught on to the catchiness of that name. And besides, they already had a color ending in "-mataz." So. Maybe I wasn't so brilliant afterall. (That's my 7-year-old-ego deflating.)

On another note, I guess you could say, my outfit matches my mood for what I hope is to come. And that is, I hope 2012 is absolutely colorful. So coloful that I want it to be a - cotton candy - dandelion - fuzzy wuzzy - gold - magic mint - mango tango - mauvelous - outer space - purple mountain majesty's - razmatazz - tickle me pink - wild strawberry type of a year. Yes, those are actual crayon colors. Wishing you one as well.

I also want to thank those who have supported me thus far, and to my Husband and Mom who help take pictures for me when I just don't want to do it myself! Gosh, I sound like I am giving an acceptance speech for some award I didn't win. Anyways, I have found a lot of happiness through my blog, as it has been an outlet for creativity and self expression. Something I have come to learn through it all, is that it's important to have a passion. Passion is what drives and fulfills us, and my blog has done just that.

Well 2011 came and went as if living was going out of style. Which hello, it's not. But do you know what apparently is in style? The Apocalypse. {Dun dun DUN!!!!} 2012 has garnered up quite the reputation. Is it just me, or is it like, every time I turn on the television, there is another show warning that the end is near. {I blame Husband for only watching the Science channel.} Epidemic or plague, flood or killer tsunami, solar flare or super volcano. The cataclysmic list of events goes on and on and on. Yet, the experts warning us have just as many answers as a Magic Eight Ball. How will it end? It is decidedly so. When will it end? Cannot predict now. What's the probability for it occurring? Signs point to yes. Why do we need to know this? Concentrate and ask again. Ugh. Maybe the end is near. Maybe it's not. But, if worse comes to worse, let's hope Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis can save us so we don't miss a thing.

Again, please don't take me seriously.

An Outfit and Christmas Recap

I hope you all had a lovely holiday. I know we sure did. Husband cooked an impressive prime rib dinner for my Mom, Dad, Grandma, Brother and I on Christmas Eve. I felt so grateful that he offered to cook the entire meal. I baked individual chocolate molten lava cakes served with vanilla ice cream for dessert. We followed up dinner opening gifts. Brother hooked us up with Apple TV, and we gave my parents a weekend getaway. Husband gave us a trip to Costa Rica towards the end of January, cooking lessons and tennis rackets. I am so officially spoiled from that one. We drove down to Tucson early Sunday morning to spend Christmas with Husband's family. After the tornado of present opening, the day was low key as we lounged around and talked. We finished Christmas night off by ordering room service at our hotel room and watching "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," one of my favorite holiday movies. Monday we had the day off from work and were able to spend more time with family and visit with old friends. It was an absolutely perfect weekend, filled with beautiful days, and lots of laughs and love. And with the closing of another year, I feel so incredibly blessed.

A Conversation

I went to meet some friends for lunch and as I arrived late, I quickly made my way into the long line to order. A shorter, old man, in good health, looked at me as I was walking up and told me my outfit was "striking". Caught slightly off guard by his compliment, I laughed and thanked him. He told me I shouldn't worry because he was not hitting on me; he was already taken. Again, I laughed, and assured him that I didn't take his words for anything more than kindness.
As we stood, two strangers in line together, the old man shared reminiscently how he had been married for over fifty years, and that two years ago, his wife passed away. He reached his hand into his left shirt pocket, and gently pulled out her picture. The edges were worn. The colors were faded. The photo was shaped to the curve of his chest. As his eyes teared up, he told me he carries that picture of her, next to his heart, every day.
Moved by his words and emotion, I placed my hand on his back as if we were friends, and told the man how lucky he was, as my eyes slightly began to tear up too. We chatted a few moments longer, as I proceeded to ask him if he had any children. He did, two sons - 43 and 46. One works for the Brewers, the other the Secret Service. Again, I admired the old man for having two accomplished sons, and he thanked me for asking about them.
Quickly, it was my turn to order, and when I went to turn back around, he was gone, like a ghost in the wind. I never got his name. But he left a lasting impression. One of hope and inspiration. In a world of expensive weddings and quick divorces, of cynicism and skeptics, of philanderers and non-commiters, a little old man in a sandwich shop, with a lifetime of love behind him, reminded me that true love does exist. It exists. It exists endlessly, and it knows no bounds.

Oh Tannenbaum

Husband and I went and picked out our Christmas tree a couple of weeks ago. I delighted in decorating it. This was the very first year I was able to put up the Christopher Radko collection of ornaments (themed mainly of angels) that my Mom has been collecting for me over the course of my entire life. The collection is filled with beautiful handmade glass ornaments that sparkle and shine. You see, it is tradition every Christmas that she gifts to us (my brother, sister and I) one special piece to add to our growing collection. I love traditions because through the course of years, they become memories that live, carry on, and last a lifetime. Call me sentimental. But at the end of a long day, when I am finally able to plop myself onto our couch and warm my toes by the fire with my Husband and pupps, I stare at that Christmas tree illuminating our house. I stare at it, but I don't see any old tree decorated to no purpose. I see a tree that took 27 years to create. I admire it. And I am filled with happiness and love, because to me, that Christmas tree reminds me of my Mother. And it always will.

Holiday Look: Champagne & Burgundy

This is my second holiday party look I styled with a fancy frock from the ever fashionable and affordable Windsor Store. Whereas yesterday's look was super trendy, today's look is more elegant. I knew the perfect holiday color for a champagne dress would be a deep, rich burgundy. I stumbled upon this little Rachel Roy faux fur jacket, again, super on sale at Macys, and knew it would be absolutely perfect for this dress. I kept the accessories simple, by wearing elegant statement pieces such as snowflake earrings and a long strand of pearls knotted in the middle.
Pony tails can be an stylish alternative for any holiday party. Just curl your hair, and wear the pony low and to the side. For this look, I pulled the front sections of my hair back, pinned them into place with a couple of bobbi pins, then secured it with a clear elastic band and voila! An easy hairdo for an elegant party in matter of minutes.
I have one more holiday look that I will be sharing tomorrow. It's quite the little sparkler.

How to Wear a Little Black Dress

This holiday season, fancy up a little black dress.

Here are some of my top tips:

Instead of solid black, opt for a pair of patterned tights, or even try a bold hue.

Mix in seasonal colors. For a modern twist, play with green and red. Opt for teal, hot pink, fuchsia or burgundy.

Belt a blazer. It's even better if your belt is glittery. I love this one from JCrew (similar here). It truly goes with everything.

Keep your hair out of your face by wearing it half up and half down. Check out my tutorial here.

Make your ears sparkle with big pretty jewels. One statement piece of jewelry is all you need.

How To: The Smokey Eye

The smokey eye is perfect for any going out occasion. My version is a lighter look, with the application of two colors; one light and one dark. I like to use a lighter color on the inside of the eye to allow for light to bounce off of it. This allows for your eye to look larger, as well as to enhance your eye color. A darker color on the outside corner adds ultimate drama. Mix any two colors together to achieve this look, as long as you follow the light vs. dark rule. Silver and black (as used in the video) are definitely not your only color options. Experiment with different shadows, such as browns and blues, to find the best match for your occasion and eye color. I hope you find this helpful!

Rock and Roll-ish

I'm feeling rock and roll today. In fact, it looked like I had head banged my way through sleep, as I woke up with some serious heavy metal hair. And it wasn't on purpose. Sure, it may have looked good on Brett Michaels, but not. on. me. Then, I managed to air guitar my way around the bathroom while putting on pink lipstick (which I don't recommend unless you want to look like a girly version of Gene Simmons), as Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" was playing in the back ground. I even managed to ~~scream~~ sing to Adele in my car as I drove to work this morning. But most of all, I feel rock and roll because of this Rachel Roy leather jacket I found on sale last season at Macys for a serious steal. It's kind of small and tight on me, but I'm pretty sure that's probably how Mick Jagger wore his back in the day. (Insert annoying Maroon 5 song lyric here.) Ahhh....but I really don't. At all. All I am saying is, I could probably take someone out with my sparkly rings and clutch with faux knuckles. But don't worry. It's all in the name of fashion and rock and roll. Which are kind of the same thing.

I love holding hands. The interlocking of fingers, the cupping of two palms...In fact, you may not know it, but you do too. It's all about our intrinsic desire to touch and be touched. Scientifically speaking, (whoa bet you didn't think I'd pull that out!) holding hands reduces stress, as the simple touch produces oxytocin in your brain. Don't you ever wonder why you naturally reach for someone's hand when you are scared, nervous, sad, or in love? Whatever the reason, holding hands is simply, a connection. And in a way, I think it is a gesture that makes us extraordinarily human, when you really think about it.

So, if your hand doesn't natrually gravitate towards someone elses today, simply stretch out your arm, extend your hand, and say to a friend, "Hey, will you hold this for me?" I know I do that to Husband, and lucky for me, he always does.

Meant to Be

I saw this Madchen blazer while shopping several months ago at Anthropologie. It would be safe to admit, it was love at first sight. As I glanced at it underneath the misty lights of the store, sitting perfectly coiffed on a cold, empty mannequin, I knew it had to be on me. But, and there's always a but. It carried a $258 price tag. I knew we would never be, so regretfully, we parted ways. I walked out of the store, looked back for one final glance (so dramatic, I know), and put it in my mind that I would never think of that blazer again. Fast forward.
A few weeks ago, I walked into that same Anthropologie, on a rainy night, with nothing else in mind but to return a polka dotted apron I had purchased. I figured I would take a look around the store, just in case, and made my way to the sale rack. And there it was. That blazer. Hanging clumsily between folds of sweaters. One left. Size small. $70! In a moment, I slinked that blazer off of the hanger, wrapped it around me, gazed softly into the mirror, and then totally high-fived myself! Score!! Call it fate, but somehow, this little blazer and I found each other again. And when I exchanged it for the polka dotted apron, that I thank for allowing us to meet again, it really only felt like I bought this little gem for $40.
So, the moral of the story is this: When it comes to shopping, and life, hold out. If it is meant to be, it is meant to be. If it's not, move on, or be happy with what you've got. And, if you are patient and wait, you will be rewarded far more than any impulsiveness can give you.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! Husband and I sure did! We spent Thanksgiving at my Parent's house. Do not worry. I did not steal the pumpkin pie. I shared. Because that is what Thanksgiving is all about. Anyways, on Friday we drove to Tucson (that's where Husband's family is from), and spent the long weekend there. The weather was absolutely divine and all I wanted to do was bask in it's beauty. I'd like to say we spent the weekend outdoors hiking (which is what we had planned on doing) but most of it was consumed by eating. Lots and lots of eating. And driving around the mountains picking out our million dollar dream house. I'll take the one with the incredible city view please. Happy Monday!

Why don't I just bake one for myself, you ask? Because. I'll be relaxing all day while other people slave over the stove. So, back to my plan. What if...I sabotage the pie by "accidentally" dropping it on the floor. But, then again, that probably wouldn't be the best idea because who wants to eat pumpkin pie off the floor? Granted, I would. But I think I have a better idea. What if, I take a bite out of the pumpkin pie, abruptly spit it out onto the table and scream really loud, "EW!! This is just AWFUL!" Yep, pretty sure no one will want to eat it after that. And then I will laugh, having fooled all of my family on Thanksgiving, and I will go sit in a room by myself and devour that delicious pie I waited all year for. And then I'll blame it on the tryptophan. Happy Thanksgiving. Peace, love and pumpkin pie.

Tips for Self-Portraits

On today's Tuesday tutorial edition, I want to offer some tips to taking better self-portraits. These are things I have come to learn after almost a year of documenting my life and style through pictures. When you are the force in front of - and behind - the camera, it allows for more creative control because you can set the shot up exactly how you want it. But at other times, being your own photographer can feel limiting and intimidating. To ensure that you get the most out of your photos, keep these tips in mind!

What You Will Need.

1. Camera. I use my Canon T1i Rebel, with the standard kit lens (18-55 mm) for self portraits. However, a point and shoot works just as well.

2. Tri-pod. No need to spend big bucks on it.

3. Remote shutter release. Only if you want to avoid breaking a sweat running back and forth setting timers

4. Confidence. Because taking pictures of yourself can be awkward.

Things to Consider.

1. Background. Two items make a photo; the subject and the background. Look at both components as equal parts. When it comes to personal style photos, your background is an extension of your outfit. Therefore, it should complement what you are wearing, not compete with it.

If you are in an earthy outfit, go outside and find an open field with warm sunlight.

If your outfit is a little more edgy, find some cool architecture or a wall with bold color.

Do pick up on similar or contrasting colors and textures.

Don't pose in front of noisy backgrounds. i.e., walls with lots of graffiti, or places with lots of people/cars in the background. Noisy backgrounds detract from the subject and the eye doesn't know where to look.

No.

Don't pose with your house in the background or in your dark bedroom. It looks amateur.

When all else fails, do find a plain wall to stand in front of, and let the subject speak for itself.

2. Lighting. The best times of day to take pictures are in the morning or evening when the sun is either rising or setting. At these hours, the sun is softest. If you have to take pictures in the middle of the day, find shade to avoid harsh light and shadows on your face. However, make sure the shade is not spotty, i.e. under a tree, which can cause spotty light and shadows to appear through leaves onto your subject.

3. Natural light is amazing, and it is your friend. Always shoot without a flash to obtain the most natural looking photographs. Only use a flash whenever it is absolutely necessary. You can always make post production adjustments.

Focusing.

This is the most difficult aspect of self-portrait taking. I don't know how many times I have taken a batch of photographs to find that the pictures were blurry. To ensure that your camera focuses, set up a tall prop where you will be standing and focus the camera on it. Set the timer, and then quickly move the prop out of the way and stand directly where you placed it. This is when a remote would come in handy, so you do not have to run back and forth setting up and taking down your prop.

Modeling.

Feel uninhibited in front of the camera and let your personality shine through your photos. Move around, laugh out loud, smile, smolder. The point is to convey natural emotion. Sure, you might look crazy doing it, but no one ever called you normal. I kid, I kid. Besides, the best part about taking your own picture is that over time, you learn how to pose. For instance, it can look funny to pose with arms straight at the side. (At least in my case). So, bend an elbow slightly, or put hands on the waist to break up the length. Over time, you learn what looks good, what doesn't, what you like, what you don't, and you can take all that information and direct others when you are behind the lens. And that's a beautiful thing.

It's All in the Numbers.

Take tons of photographs. Take 100. Take 200. Take 400. The more photos you take, the more chances for capturing that perfect picture. Because let's face it, we don't look flawless in every photo. There are eye blinks, bad angles, funny expressions, out of place accessories, the list goes on. Bottom line is, more photos means more options. Period.

Composition.

Make the photo interesting through composition. Don't just stand there! Zoom in. Zoom out. Try different angles. Get up close to the camera. Get on the ground. Play with lines. Crop the subject. Some of these actions can be done in post editing, but when you try different things while shooting, you may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. If not, press erase.

And most importantly, when it comes to taking a self-portrait, be you!

I ended up at Macy's One Day Sale event yesterday. Twice. I browsed the shoe section during lunch and then headed back over after work. Even Husband joined me for some shopping, which is really, actually quite rare. Hey, we love a good sale. Anyhoo, I had been eyeing these G by Guess booties since I saw some random girl in a similar pair, wearing them at H&M. I thought they looked effortlessly cool on her and hoped to pull them off just as well. My Adventures in Hair Color

My beautiful friend and hair stylist, Alayna, helped switch my hair color up over the weekend. It's not a drastic change, but I really like it. You see, I have a tendency to get bored rather easily when it comes to the color of my hair. For the majority of my life, I went for the bleached-out blonde look. It was like an obsession as to how blonde I could be. Everytime I went back to the salon, I would say, "Can you make me blonder?"...."How about blonder!" as the bleach and dollar signs washed down the drain.

At 26, I had a quarter-century hair crisis, and thought it would be a great idea to go dark like Olivia Wilde. Hey, dark hair and light eyes is striking, right? Well, I come to find out, striking on Olivia. You see, everyone close to me pretty much hated it and would remind me of it, often. And somewhere underneath that dark dye, I still identified as a blonde. "Oh, this isn't my natural color," I would tell people. (Yet, neither was blonde.)

So, my quarter-century hair crisis soon turned into a quarter-century identity crisis. After a month of not recognizing myself, I knew I had to get back to my roots. But what where they? I found out, with a few highlights, my natural hair color wasn't so dish-watery, or "poop-color" as I used to call it, and, not only did I embrace it, I actually loved it.

But, like I said...I still get bored. But not as easily. The days of bleached out hair, and trying to drastically change who I was, by changing my hair color are behind me. But, I'm never afraid of a little change.
The moral of this story is simple, but it took me a while to learn:

Don't be afraid to experiment and try something different or new.

But remember, you are most beautiful just the way you are.

Growing up, I always used to bake. It is something I remember doing with my Mom. As a little girl, I would sit barefoot on the cold counter top and study her every move as she heaped, dashed, mixed, and danced her way around the kitchen. I got to help too. "Gently," she said, as my small hands learned to crack an egg.

Nostalgia aside, baking will always be happiness to me, for many reasons. I love being able to create a delicious something from scratch. I love trying new recipes, and dabbling in old ones that have been passed on from my Grandmother, and perfected by Mother. I love licking the dough off the spoon after all the ingredients have been combined, and the sweet smells that permeate through rooms as my creation is baking. I love biting into a warm, gooey dessert, and enjoying it with a tall glass of milk.
But, I don't bake for just myself. I bake to share with others. To me, baking is love, love is happiness, and happiness is just a couple spoonfuls of sugar away!

DIY : Triple Knot Buns

This hair-do is very versatile. After not washing my hair for a couple of days, but still desiring a little style, I throw these easy peasy buns in. It is a great alternative to the top knot, or the standard bun. All it requires is for you to know how to twist and pin, and you're ready to go in five minutes! This hairstyle is also great for dressing up. I spent a little more time on it, and wore it in my previous post with that little Giambattista Valli number. Although we are all grown-up, and the years have worn on us, some heavier than others, I believe it is still important to live life through a child's eyes. Children see truth and beauty. They laugh at everything, and find so much happiness in the simple things. Growing up is inevitable, but we can still strive to be young in our soul.

Today, I am introducing a new weekly post titled, "Happiness Is..." It is a happiness diary of sorts. In fact, that's exactly what it is. Each week I will photograph and write about one small thing that I delight in. I invite you to link up here, and post along with me each Wednesday so that we can all begin to be more aware of the simple things around us.

Woodland Slippers and Socks: Urban Outfitters

As I lazily make my way out of bed after a long night of fuzzy dreams, I am brought back to reality as my toes touch down and my slippers greet my feet. As I slip them on, the world suddenly feels softer. Wherever I go, they go. After a long day of strutting around in high heels, my tired feet find comfort in their plush, cushioned soles. My toes snuggle in for warmth; I can relax now. Before I turn into a pumpkin, I doze off for another night of dreams long before the clock strikes midnight, to ensure I never lose a slipper.

I was looking through some old drafts that I had saved some time ago on my blog that were never published. I came across this post, titled, "Words on Life." It's a slightly revised, personal mantra of sorts, when it comes to life and style. Obviously, living a couple of years over a quarter century, doesn't qualify me to share unsolicited advice. But what the heck, I'm keeping it light. So, without further ado, here are a few pieces of advice that I have come to learn, in 27 years, in 200 words or less:

Style does not equal an expensive price tag.

Nor does an expensive price tag equal style.

Confidence is sexy.

...so is a little black dress.

High heels are your leg's best friend, and your feet's worst enemy.

Always wear mascara. If anything, it will look dramatic when you cry.

Beauty is evident in your soul; not just your skin.

The best sense of humor is the one that can laugh at itself.

Set your own trends.
Don't be afraid to be you; live loud.

If you worry about what other people think of you, you'll never know what you think of yourself.

Besides, worrying only gives you wrinkles.

If it doesn't make you proud, don't do it.
Live in the moment. The past is gone; the future undetermined.

When you are having a bad day, turn it around.
But ice cream makes everything better.
Sing loud. Dance often. Rock out with a serious air guitar.

And when all else fails, don't forget to smile.

Casey Weigand Talks Inspiration

For a while now, I have been feeling a lack of inspiration. It's difficult to blog when it's just not there. Maybe you can relate. In order to get some creative mojo back, I called on the help of one of my favorite bloggers, the beautiful and talented Casey Weigand, of The Weigand's, to share how she stays inspired on a daily basis. After reading her post, I know what I have to do to get it back! - Katie

My name is Casey Wiegand, I am a freelance artist, wife and mama.

I am so thrilled and honored to be here today guest posting. When Katie asked me to post about staying inspired I thought about it all afternoon, what should I write?

My life revolves around creativity. I am a blogger (here), I am an abstract artist (here), we own an art studio for kids (here), my husband is a photographer and makes movies and I also do blog design (here). So being completely honest a lot of times I am just burnt out!

I am constantly creating.

So maybe the trick is to let ourselves have a break...then in a moment we don't expect it, we will be re.inspired. A fresh tube of paint, feet hitting the pavement on an evening run, the first snow of winter, a great song on the radio with the windows down, a late night sitting on the kitchen floor talking with your husband about dreams. These are the moments that I run and write out a blog post or grab my paintbrush.

But you know it's okay to not feel inspired or creative all the time. That is exhausting. And sometimes we need to cut ourselves a break.

We will come back better, more creative.

If you have been in a rut for awhile I say get back to what you love. For me I would go sit by a lake and watch the sunset, I would put a good song on the radio and dance with my babies, I would eat waffles on my back porch or look through pictures on pinterest.....then maybe somewhere along the way....you will find it again.

DIY Manicure

It's important to take care of your hands, especially as you age! And even more important? You don't need to spend money going to the nail salon every week to do it. Take these simple tips, invest in a few products and pamper yourself. And I have to mention; I am so dead serious about that homemade exfoliant of olive oil and salt. Without a doubt, it is better than any product I have ever bought and tried. So, if anything, try that before putting lotion on your hands tonight! And heck, while you're at it, ask your hunny for a hand massage.

Cocoa Brownies

These brownies are sooo good and sooo easy to make, that you will never bake from a box again. Trust me.

Prep 15 minutes
Cook 18-20 minutes
Makes 16 delicious brownies

Ingredients:

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa (Ghiradelli)
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/3 cup mini chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 8"x8" metal baking pan. In a bowl, combine flour, unsweetened cocoa, baking powder and salt
In saucepan, melt butter on low. Remove from heat; with spatula, stir in sugar, then eggs, 1 at a time, and vanilla untill well blended. Stir in flour mixture. Spread batter in prepared pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips.
Bake 18-20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in brownies comes out clean.

There was something about summer that felt stagnant. Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was the mundane. But for whatever reason, it felt like the days rolled together and the sun never set. Summer left me feeling thirsty and tired as the road I wandered aimlessly turned to sand.

As October rushed in without warning, I'm happy to say goodbye; to lock it up with a key, and look to new beginnings. With a new season, comes new change. Not only in the earth around us, as the weather cools down, and the leaves slowly change. But also in ourselves, as we change colors, and shed some leaves of our own.

Maui'ed Two Years Ago Today

Two years ago today, I married my Husband, in Maui, Hawaii. It was a very small and intimate ceremony with thirty of our closest friends and family. A tsunami warning was put into effect on the morning of the big day, from the earthquake that hit Chile hours before. Thankfully, there was no tsunami. And the weather couldn't have been more perfect. Our ceremony began at 5:00 PM, as the golden sun hung low over the Pacific. We walked barefoot on the grassy knoll that overlooked the ocean, to draw us nearer to each other and the earth, as we shared our vows. I opted for a simple Nicole Miller wedding dress, and wore a white orchid behind my ear. Orchids symoblize love, beauty and strength. We wanted our wedding to be a reflection of our relationship and our personalities, and liked the spontaneity and romance of a destination wedding in Hawaii. The day was completely about us, as we didn't get carried away details or guest lists. We were surrounded entirely by love and beauty. And that's all that mattered.

To think. Two people are born. Born on different days, in different years, in different towns. Born to different parents, different families. Two separate personalities. Two separate experiences. One grew up as boyish as they come, stirring up harmless trouble in the neighborhood with his friends. While the other, shy, practiced piano and danced in her room. They graduated from school, and went on to college, still unaware of each others existence. She dreamed of him her whole life. He dreamed of her. A faceless ideal, to an age old desire. Is it fate to believe, when their lives collide? Like two atoms who have spent year after year circling the atmosphere, searching for their complete likeness. Is it fate to believe that these two strangers happen to be at the exact same place, at the exact same time? Their eyes, suddenly, meet across a dark room, filled with a sea of people. They connect. They draw near. They don't let go. Or, is it merely, pure coincidence; the right place, at the right time, with the right chemistry? Destiny or not, these two people met. Their two hearts and their two souls spontaneously collided, completely unaware that their dreams just caught up to them. And somewhere along their separate journeys, these two people became exactly who they needed to be for that one moment in time. That one moment that fated the rest of their lives, to become one heart and one soul. It's an interesting thing. To think.

You wouldn't know it. But. Right now, I'm missing a tooth. Schnuckles. That lil rascal popped right off while I was biting my way through a soft and chewy chocolate chip cookie. And it totally ruined the sweet moment we were sharing together. {Oh wait. That's not a chocolate chip. What the? Ahhhh crap.} Back to the dentist I go. You see, we've been seeing quite a bit of each other lately. First it was for a new crown. Then it was for a root canal. You know, fun stuff like that. But. I digress. Let's talk fall colors!
Being a color enthusiast myself, I am loving all of the mixing and matching of hues. Normally, when we think of fall, we think of browns, maybe oranges. You know, leafy colors. But, this season, colors be poppin'! We've got purples mixed with reds; teels mixed with oranges; burgundy. The key to take color into fall though, is to stick to the deeper tones that are more muted than the brights we see in summer. I am seriously loving these deep teel bell bottoms from JBrand. They pretty much make my legs and bum happy. I knew when I got them that I had to find a top that was complementary in color and tone. So, let's spin that color wheel and get creative for fall! Shall we? Be as colorful as you feel!

How To: The Top Knot

The top knot, or messy bun, is a great hair style when you don't have a lot of time, but want some style, and it always looks classic. It works best for the gals with longer hair, but shorter haired gals, need not to worry. Here's how to achieve the look:

1. Start with a smooth pony tail, high on the top of your head. Secure with an elastic hair band.

2. Take a small comb and tease or back comb small sections of your hair, working from the roots to the ends, to create fullness. The point of a top knot is to have height.

3. Repeat step two until all of the ponytail hair has been teased. If you have time, you can also curl it with a curling iron.

4. If you want your pony tail to have some looseness, gently pull the hair around the pony tail holder loose, at the top, sides and back of head.

5. Gently brush the teased hair to smooth it out slightly. Make sure however, to not brush out the tease.

6. Gather the hair in the form of a bun and wrap the hair around your pony tail holder in a clockwise direction. You do not need to twist, just wrap.

7. You can adjust the top knot for width and volume here. Secure with several bobby pins at the base to keep the bun in place.

8. Throw some hair spray in there and you've got your bun, hun! I like to top it off with a cute pair of earrings to draw attention to your face.
